Our tale begins ‘midst winter’s chill…
The night-time air is cold and still
As brigands close in for the kill
On a castle, set atop a hill.
Inside its walls, the survivors sit.
Their fate is sealed, and they know it.
And in the cold, they huddle and shiver
As one by one they stand and deliver
Their final address to these impromptu friends
And tremble with fear as the curtain descends…

The Narrator
Molly McGregor with Shiver, Gibber and Twitch
A prostitute and murderess, who throughout her iniquitous career has sent up to seventy salacious souls screaming into Hades. She is attended to by her boys, three bastard sons of the lovers she murdered. They are very devoted to their mother.
Elmo Jones
A wandering storyteller, bluesman and harmonica player
Tommy and Reuben Bland
A young boy and his elder brother, orphaned by the battle.
John Young The Blacksmith
An old man who remains stoic throughout the show, whose gruff outward demeanour belies a secret inner yearning.
Major Gladwell Graves
A retired military man, whom only age and infirmity have prevented from exacting vengeance on the wicked hordes outside.
Miss Charlotte Graves
Orphaned granddaughter of the Major, who dotes upon Tommy.
Will Scupper, The Cowardly Soldier
A young soldier, wracked with sorrow and anguish at his own cowardice at having run away from the battle, leaving his father and comrades to certain death.
“Shaky” Jake Handy
The town drunkard, who remains cheerfully unconcerned by his fate.
